Phase III:
Final Artistic Interpretation of Prototypes

Art has been an essential component of ancient sky observatories across the globe, not only in terms of architecture and sculpture, but also in the incorporation of murals and mosaics. In Phase III, a competition will be held to find artists who can artistically convert functional prototypes into visually wonderful permanent artistic expressions for the Solar Calendar site. In 2008, a "Call for Entries" will be coordinated with Kala Art Institute and the Berkeley Civic Art Commission.

With the performance and size parameters of each prototype instrument established, a selected artist or team of artists will work collaboratively with astronomers/archaeoastronomers and engineers to interpret the artistic, scientific and cultural elements of the final design for the Phase III Exhibits.

The resulting artistic interpretations will accentuate the role of each instrument, visually enhance the site, and unite all of the elements of the Calendar in a harmonious way. The innovative artistic aspect of the Solar Calendar will independently draw in visitors who might not be compelled to visit for reasons of scientific educations. As just as those attracted to it for science may be introduced by osmosis to the cultural components of the site, those drawn by art will be introduced to science and the virtues of a champion of social justice.

One artist may be selected as creative director for the design and installation of all exhibits. Or several artists may be selected to interpret and realize one or more exhibits. And though some design elements may appear to be minimally predetermined, they do not preclude the possibility of a talented artist submitting an entirely new and inspired vision for what we are trying to achieve.
